Hello!
I’m an award-winning writer and editor with over a decade of experience shaping content across print and digital media. Most recently, I served as the editor of TIME magazine’s opinion section, where I worked with hundreds of authors, thought leaders, academics, and journalists on topics ranging from culture, gender, and equity to health, climate, and national politics. Before that, I was an acquiring and developmental editor at Penguin Random House, where I edited bestselling and prize-winning books by a diverse group of authors, including Alok Vaid-Menon, Adam Eli, Kimberly Drew, Chella Man, Jessica Hische, Hanif Abdurraqib, Franny Choi, Ryan North, Erica Henderson, Melanie Gillman, Ryan Estrada, and others.
My writing spans personal essays, criticism, profiles, and reported features, with bylines in TIME, Rolling Stone, Time Out New York, CULTURED, and more. I'm also a member of CareForce at the Fair Play Policy Institute and have led writing and editing workshops and panels across the country.
In September 2025, I founded Sonis Editorial to help guide writers through their book journeys—from demystifying the publishing process to developing proposals and manuscripts with empathy, clarity, and purpose. I also offer strategic support in shaping and positioning op-eds that connect a writer’s message to a broader audience.
Publishing and media can often feel like two very opaque industries. It doesn’t have to be that way. My goal is to make your publishing journey transparent, sustainable, and empowering.
Nice things people have said about me!

“Having Rachel as an editor brought clarity and precision to the work without ever compromising its core truth. Her openness to challenging narratives and understanding of the systems we aim to disrupt made her an ideal collaborator. I’m grateful for her care, insight, and hope for a loving future.”

“I have been fortunate enough to work with Rachel Sonis during her tenure at TIME. She is a thoughtful, detail-oriented editor who patiently works with her writers to bring out the best in them. Since working with Rachel, I have been able to expand my editorial reach to Canada and the UK. If you are looking to grow as a writer, I’d strongly recommend you hire for editorial services.”

“At every turn, Rachel's approach to the editorial process is a dream. Her vision as an editor is thoughtful, ambitious, and brimming with the clarity and care that encourages writers to think deeply about their voice, their choices, and where their work fits into wider conversation. Working with Rachel encouraged me to take risks on the page, and in my thinking, that I otherwise wouldn't have, leading me to new spaces in my own work and ideas. She's a true collaborator who understands what her writers are trying to do—but strengthens it tenfold with the perspective and structural skill she brings to projects. Having the opportunity to work with and learn from Rachel has been one of the highlights of my writing career.”

“Working with Rachel has not only strengthened my writing—its direction, its clarity, its impact—but has also emphasized the value of collaboration when it comes to creative product. She approaches stories with equal parts candor and tenderness (the latter a rarity in a landscape that otherwise can feel extractive or transactional). Rachel has a unique ability to hone in on voice, spotlight the most accessible and resonant narrative arcs, and all the while encourage her collaborators in their expertise. I am a better creative because of Rachel's guidance and partnership.”

“Rachel is the ideal editor to work with – sharp, supportive, and generous in making the work better. We collaborated on opinion pieces and book excerpts and I felt like I had a true partner in the process, a blessed rarity in an era of overextended editorial staffs.”

“Rachel makes my writing better, plain and simple. Her thoughtful editorial approach helps me see where I can firm up my thesis, dive deeper for the reader's benefit, and more clearly communicate my point of view. We've collaborated on many pieces for TIME and I hope to work with her on other pieces in the future. I highly recommend Rachel without reservation.”
